What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment
If you've never seen a chiropractor before, booking that first appointment can feel like a bit of an unknown. Will there be treatment on day one? What should you wear? Do you need a referral? Here's exactly how a first visit works at our Calgary clinic.
First things first: no referral needed
Chiropractors are primary-contact healthcare providers in Alberta, which means you can book directly — no physician referral required. If you do have imaging, test results, or reports from another provider, bring them along; they help complete the picture, but they're not required.
Step 1: Your health history
We start by talking. You'll walk us through what brought you in, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you've tried so far. We'll also cover your broader health history, activity level, work demands, and goals — because a desk worker with neck pain and a hockey player with neck pain need different plans, even if the symptom sounds the same.
Step 2: A thorough physical assessment
Next comes a detailed assessment designed to find the root cause of your pain — not just the spot that hurts. Depending on your concern, this may include movement testing, orthopedic and neurological screening, joint assessment, and soft tissue evaluation. If something warrants imaging or a specialist's opinion, we'll refer you rather than guess.
Step 3: Findings and a plan — in plain language
Before any treatment happens, we explain what we found, what we think is driving it, and what your options are. Patient education is a core part of how we practice: you should leave your first visit understanding your body better than when you arrived.
Step 4: Your first treatment
In most cases, treatment begins the same day. Depending on your assessment and your preferences, that may include a combination of:
- Joint manipulation or mobilization (adjustments)
- Soft tissue therapy (Functional Range Release® techniques)
- Medical electroacupuncture
- Targeted mobility and rehab exercises to do at home
Nothing happens without your consent, and everything is adapted to what suits you best — if needles aren't your thing, we have other tools.
How to prepare
- Wear comfortable clothing you can move in.
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete your intake forms (or do them online when you book).
- Bring your questions. The first visit is as much about you understanding your plan as it is about treatment.
